The Salt Lake City 7

The Salt City 7 is a combo going back to their roots, playing traditional jazz hotter than ever before. Meeting in Utah at Brigham Young University, this group of exceptional individuals came together to play in BYU’s “Jazz Legacy Band.” The group clicked quickly and felt this needed to continue on post graduation, thus beginning the Salt City 7. The group includes the amazing young talents of Jory Woodis on clarinet, Austie Robinson on trumpet, Brian Woodbury on trombone, Zoe Jorgensen on bass, Brennan Tolman on drums, and Kurt Reeder on piano (with Parker Speirs on guitar joining in 2016). Each individual is a master of their instrument on any genre, making the group a ball of fire that is sure to keep you grooving all day long.

“Here are six (later becoming seven in 2016) who have dedicated themselves to the study and performance of jazz. All are accomplished improvisers in modern jazz, yet when they play pre-bop styles they are able to capture the phrasing, melodic content and feeling of traditional jazz, including New Orleans improvisation. As one of their teachers I have witnessed a significant transition from students to well-rounded young professional musicians. In my 35 years of leading student traditional jazz bands, the team of Jory Woodis, Austie Robinson, and Brian Woodbury are the most creative and authentic “front line” of any incarnations of the BYU Jazz Legacy Band.” –Steve Call, PhD Professor of Music at BYU.
